For those who just want to know the bare facts about this charger, here's a super-short 2 minute version.
If you want to know more the full version of the video has schematics, circuit description and data on specific components.

Long story short, it looks a well designed and safe charger. Just as we'd expect from IKEA.
It's also VERY affordable.

The much shorter version of the review of the Ikea Smhagal Power supply. This is a new power supply that seems to be designed to replace the order of Cop Blood Power supply and the main changes are that it has a wider voltage range 100 volts up to 240 volts, but it also has a very different circuitry with some significant improvements. This power supply only puts out 5 volts. It is rated for a maximum of 3.4 amps output with up to 2.4 amps on any particular port.

The circuitry is very interesting. It's evolved greatly. Let's Zoom down in this a little bit. It has the normal Uh incoming supplier, direct fire.

It's got an onboard fuse and Uh in Rush limiting and metal oxaver. It's got a couple of smoothing capacitors with an inductor on the other side and then it has a very interesting switch mode chip that has an interesting feature. It uses this transistor to turn off its initial bootstrap charging circuit, which means that it will draw slightly less current and standby. It also has two levels of over voltage protection and thermal protection.

the circuit board that will shut the unit down if it gets too hot. inside. there is a good electrical separation Gap with the Transformer wound as a layer of the primary, then the secondary winding in very thickly insulated wire, then another layer of the secondary, then the feedback winding and the electrical separation in this is very good. There's a class-wide capacitor as it should be a little spark gap there as well then on the secondary.

One of the most interesting features is the synchronous rectifier a control Chip and A mosfet which results in almost lossless rectification. so it's going to actually reduce the heat that would normally have been caused by a shot kid out which used to require heat sink in the coupler. There are several chips in the output here ditch, one of the output ports has its own over current protection chip and then we've got the usual chips that are designed to indicate on the data lines. Uh, what? The device being charged wants to see basically a very nicely designed circuit board and that's all there is to see in the short version.

If you want to see the long version, it is about 25 minutes long, but it goes into much more detail with schematics.

+1 on the shorter version for those "TL/DW" viewers. (Like me, when using cell phone data.)

Still too long for somone that understands the tech stuff 🙁

They might not be MOSFET's they could be GaN transistors

This is like having a trailer for a movie. I'll save the longer version to enjoy with a big coffee tomorrow.

Thanks for the well timed video on this, we picked on of these up earlier in the week to power a desk light, pretty tidy circuit by the looks of it, will catch up with the longer video. I wonder what the single output £2.50 version is like, that’s quite some engineering to a price.

Apple can still learn a lot from Ikea, and they haven't even been in the tech industry for too long..

Love your videos, and I'm happy you did this for when I don't have a half hour to kill

How do I identify the IKEA power supply, my one has the model number ICPSW5-17GB-1 , what’s the code on your latest on?
    Short and sharp videos……ace 👍🚀
