I bought a soldering station from an ebay supplier and as recommended by various online resources I did an earth/ground continuity test. It was fine, but somewhat defeated by the supply of a European plug and an adaptor to UK square pin that defeated the earth connection. I chopped off the plug and replaced it with a standard UK fused square pin one. This is a quick look inside the adaptor, which has various pop-out plug options.
Is this the oldest Big Clive video on YouTube? – I think it's the oldest one I've ever come across! – so far.
Could that be the original "deathdaptor"? – It looks to me like there's an awful lot of metal parts in a very small space. Is this the one where the USA/Australia pins are live at all times?
JW did a vid on this ….. But your voice is more soothing.
I'm glad you mentioned how you can get a shock if you plug it in with just one pin in the outlet. I live in Canada and used to have an extension cord running to my bed so I could plug in my phone charger or swap it out for whatever else while I was in bed without having to get up. But since I usually plugged these things in in the dark, I would often get it so there was only one pin plugged in. And of course being that it was dark, your first instinct is to want to feel around to make sure it's plugged in right. I never actually did, but I always wondered just how much risk there would have been if I touched the exposed pin.
Is that the death-dapter with retractable bulb testers/suicide pins?
There's nothing wrong with the 3rd pin being plastic, but where it fails is in having holes for NEMA and various European 3 pin plugs.
can you make a video on how to fix an earth leakage?
Wow, they even put CE logo on it as a joke.
Anyone who uses an adapter for the UK instead of cutting it off and wiring in a UK plug is just lazy.
I came across a similar device being marketed as a travel adaptor in a large retail store.
My suspicion was that it might be possible to deploy the continental pins whilst the UK connections were in use.
So it proved to be, so I alerted Trading Standards locally, and offered to give them the said unit in order for them to conduct their own tests. They declined, saying they needed to buy it themselves. However, they said they would convey their test results to me.
I never heard any more, and the wretched things were still on sale for a pound for the rest of the holiday season.
Thanks for all your input in making these videos.
