I saw this "OPEN" sign in an asian outlet and couldn't resist buying one to take to bits.
Notable badness is the mini UK square pin plug that has a sleeved earth pin and no fuse. The capacitor in the capacitive dropper is a 1uF 400V one.
I do like the construction, since it looks very good from the outside.

Terry, who runs our local chippy, has this exact sign in his window, and it's been there a lot of years, and no failed LEDs, unlike the newer ones I've seen in town, with smaller LEDs and more of them, more colours and more fancy animation.

    Crude, but effective!

Is it possible that the plug has a one-time fuse moulded in the plastic?

Saw a brilliant sign in a cafe yesterday. It's an old style neon sign. The output of the transformer is fed straight through the wall onto the tubes. There is no covering anywhere, and no insulation on the tube ends or the ht conductors at all. Its all within reach of customers sat at the nearest table or of the serving staff. From the sized of the tubes I would guess about 10kV supply, they are real neon tubes, you can see the neon glow where the phosphors end, on most of the tubes.

i would put loads of rgb slow diffused leds in the open word

Sleeved earth pin on that plug as well. Never understood why some manufacturers do that – surely that's not compliant (or at least not a good idea) anywhere even in countries that don't need a fused plug?

    "Johnson counter" . . . Wasn't that Jezebel's job title?

Since having seen this video months ago I've been seeing these signs everywhere๐Ÿ˜…

On the bright side, you can salvage the LEDs off of this.

It's like a school project ! The chippy across the road has one of these signs, and now I really wanna take it apart :p

What do you think is its most likely way of harming the user – shock or fire?

The reason the letters are grouped the way that they are is because they can be animated as well

I remember seeing one of those in a place with covered windows(the kind that lets light trough, but people can't look in) and it was only on in the night…

My local bar has one of these in their front window. Exactly the same but US power.
Not sure if it looks like this inside.

seems like a regular curcut board would be cheaper than doing this by hand but maybe not

I should imagine a lot of the tackiness is largely due to hand-me-down knowledge. Not the best design but someone threw it together once and so nobody bothered to change it.
