I've always recommended using prominent brand USB chargers for safety. So I thought I'd take an IKEA one to bits and assess it for safety with regards to isolation and transformer construction.

I love how he called high frequency transformers a black art lol
The Ikea charger is interesting – until I saw the teardown, I'd have simply avoided the brand all together.
Excellent video Clive. I'm going to share with my friends how important it is not to use cheap/tiny chargers and buy good quality chargers from reputible retailers. It could save someone's life/prevent a house fire.

What is the difference between IKEA SMAHAGEL vs IKEA KOPPLA ;
Hello Clive from WNY.. I believe that the unit is sonically sealed with ultrasound. very commonly used.
Alright… I hate the NEMA 5-15 plug that we use in North America, it's horribly unsafe. But holy crap your plugs over there are fucking ugly.
Just bought some of these on reduced (end of line)
They have a new version called smahagel,
Look to be the same and rated the same.
Would be interesting to see if the quality has gone down.
Those usb things from imea are garbage. The back up of the backup
Great video!
Maybe time to check the new version "Småhagel" which look the same but is 30% cheaper. Just to see if it's as well built or if the reduced price also reduced the quality.
I live in Thailand and many 20 Baht (about .5 USD) stores sell adapters. It's quite common to read about people grabbing their phones and being electrocuted.
On the apple charger can you plug a regular figure 8 power cord into it rather than the modular power thing? It looks just like a figure 8 cord.
I have always scrolled past your videos, but now I can't stop watching them. Keep it up Clive!
I bought two of these after your review Clive, amazing!
Bit dearer than Chinese crap but they are very SAFE!
