This video is very short, but if you follow the links below it has the potential to take you into a very deep Internet rabbit hole.
A VAWT (Vertical Axis Wind Turbine) is less efficient than the classic HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) but has a few advantages that make it a very interesting option for experimentation.
The main advantages are that it can handle wind from any direction, including turbulent wind, and does not need rotating electrical contacts like the classic wind turbines that have to turn to face the wind.
Three of the most notable versions are:-
The Savonius, which you may recognise as the whirly things used as van ventilators where internal airflow is needed, and on top of some chimneys to assist in creating an updraught. They are also sometimes used as compact turbines on boats for topping the battery up.
The very stylish Darrieus turbine that is more efficient than the original Savonius design.
The Revolving Wing turbine which has strong similarities to the Darrieus version.

YouTube has a lot of videos about DIY wind power systems, but be cautious of their efficiency claims. People rating the output in voltage as opposed to actual load driving power are the most common bits of bad science. Just because it rotates doesn't mean it generates much power.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- https://www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of YouTube's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Temporary location change so the sound is going to be different and appearance. This is quite unusual. I Thought initially when I saw this in Poundland that this was a solar light, but in reality if I blowing this, it turns out that their spinning tulip is a V-a-w-t Avant a vertical access wind turbine and I thought it'd be quite interesting if I pull this bit off here. if I pull it off at the construction has a little clip-on support that is quite tight and brick Clips on and then it's got a little rubbery end cap to hold it in place.

But I thought it'd be quite interesting taking this rivet out of here and then spreading it flat to see what this looks like when it's actually laid flat. Because they've from a sheet of flat material, they've basically created this sort of three-dimensional turbine shape. So I'm going to do that right now one moment, please. And this is what it looks like when you take the rivet out and lay it flat.

So something that's worth mentioning about vertical axis wind turbines versus the traditional horizontal axis ones Those are the ones you see in traditional wind farms is that it doesn't matter what way the airflow is by even turbulent air will actually make them operate so they're better suited to some applications. They can also be made quite easily and scaled down, and if I put the links down the description for you to follow for the sevonious turbines and the Darius turbines, you'll suddenly realize that you've seen these about before they find their way into unusual applications, and it certainly is an interesting area to explore. It's a bit of a rabbit hole you'll end up exploring the internet quite a lot for that, and YouTube has plenty of videos, but keep an open mind when you look at them because some of them are trying to present them as somewhat better than they are in some instances, but it's an interesting subject. Vertical axis wind turbines now apparently available from Poundland.

That's a new spin on Robert Murray-Smith's designs.🤔( I hardly recognise the subject without gears and magnets attached🤯)

Thanks for your insights. I might be interested in buying if these are in the UK as well as Ireland? Nobody will be switching anybody's lights whilst LEDs are some of the most energy efficient!

What is the point of them apart from generating sales for retailers? Pointless junk comes to mind. Potential noise pollution to annoy neighbours perhaps? “Let’s see if we can produce a product that generates sales and quickly ends up in landfill?”

Those bearings will fail prematurely despite the massive investments in this technology.

I miss your older, slightly longer form videos where we got to see you taking these things apart.
But I’m a bit odd like that, not really your usual YouTube demographic I suppose.

There used to be quite a few Quiet Revolution wind turbines in my area but a lot of them have been removed over the past few years, I'm assuming because of maintenance costs

Hi Clive, loving your videos. Just a quick question though, have you passed your old thermal image camera phone to someone else? The reason I ask, is there is an avid follower of yours that I got to repair my mobile phone last week, a young teenager who is known a Jake's phone repair in Skipton, still at school and trying to get going in electronic repair. I asked him if he had a thermal camera, and it seems that he's saving up for one. He's gradually build in an electronic lab, with microscope, PSUs, heat pads etc, with the help of his fab Grandad. Anyway I just thought if you were in the mind to give a young lad a bit of help on the way…. Cheers, Tony

I have a garden light I made from a box aircon fan and its dc motor. Just need a rectifier and a 1000uf capacitor it lights up when wind spins the fan motor is dc40 volt I should upload a video about it.

Perhaps we can try this with TBR TURBO BIRD REPELLERS mounted on HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINES towers in city of Mumbai, India to prevent bird fault ( Crow dropping metal wire piece on Cross arm while building bird nest), these bearings are very very smooth and needs very low wind speed to keep rotating😇
