At the point of making this video Poundland in the UK have just launched a range of LED lamps which are available in either a globe or candle version with bayonet cap or small Edison screw base.
My local shop only had the B22 globe version, so here it is being taken to bits and analysed.

Your comment about them getting too hot. How hot do you think the old style incandescent bulbs got???

I have tried the current version of the Poundland 5 Watt LED lamp, several of them have failed in a very short time, pretty well useless.

Great Video! We all knew that Poundland and the likes were going to get involved in "LED". They place a 2yr Gurantee but they know 99.9% of consumers will not take them back after 6months when they fail. But LED has been going this way not that we view the industry said way. We look at Thermals, longevity and seek to offer L70 over a given number of years usage. As you said "What do you expect for a quid" cost for them is good and they make good money on these. Not that a lot of a quality industry would sell them….

I have just made the mistake of buying 4 replacement £1 5watt spotlight type LEDs from Poundland. Got to the place where they were being used, found that 2 of the bulbs that I had to replace were LEDs bought from Poundland only a couple of weeks ago!
Moral of this story: It is very unlikely that anybody can reliably make LED bulbs at the moment that retail for only £1 – I shall be taking back the failed bulbs.

I had the 5w Electrek candle bulb from Poundland. I used it for two months until it started to flicker and then died. It lights very dimly and is now unusable. It did get hot at the base so I suspected it wouldn't last long.

Nice teardown Clive – know what you mean I have no heating on in my house either as I suffer from Hyperhydrosis myself.
Those bulbs look like a candidate for a house fire!
Buy cheap pay twice was always my grans motto but in this case it might be buy cheap, pay with your life!

Thanks for the review, very informative, Clive, if you don't me asking, what do you think about LedHut bulbs? I got few of them in my house.

My local Poundland has 240V GU10 3 LED 3W lamps in stock, it's held together with screws and is easy to strip down but interestingly, it seems to have a small, isolated switching driver in the base. More interestingly, the LEDs light and glow dimly when connected to 12V DC so it would seem the driver is running as there doesn't seem to be any DC leakage path through it to the LEDs

they are very bright, and as you say they may well get too hot.
