Paper shredder goes bang. Mitch had just oiled it with some maintenance spray and the collection bucket reached just the right fuel-air mixture to ignite from the motor brush sparks.

It wasn't a shredder, but a lifted 4×4 truck starter solenoid my boss decided to spray WD-40 on that was sticking. Worked great, except afterwards for at least two years the starter now threw wicked FLAMES every time the key was turned. Two years of flames from a single squirt of an aerosol can.
Where should I put this heavy dangerous tool? I could put it anywhere…..Aha! let's put it on a shelf above the doorway!
My owners manual suggests running a sheet of wax paper through the shredder to lube the cutters. The most common propellant ( to pressurize it) in aerosol sprayers is propane.
This is why it's always important to read the instructions. It clearly said 'The message will self destruct after reading' not 'Destroy this message after reading'
I can't wait for the shredder at work to approach its use by date!
Cleverly bypassing the "Don't try this at home" maxim in the name of CLIVE SCIENCE!
Ya that's a thing in my household atm. Everything goes bang. Ventilators, space heaters of all kind, kitchen machines. It has been quiet for a while now but I know to not test my luck.
Is he English? Just seems like an English reaction. Oh! Ok then better unplug it. Also what's with the saw above the door? That's some final destination thinking lol
I done that to my grans hoover once. Sprayed air freshner from an aerosol can into the dust collection box and switched it on!
BANG!!!!
luckily hoover still worked and worked as if nothing happened to it..
Mine exploded too but I didn’t see the light like that. US version too. Think it’s a common failure in the circuit board. Probably a cheap way to force people to buy new shredders 😛
Oscillating saw LOUD bangs made me jump while cutting rectangular black plastic drainage in the corner of my back yard.
The curved saw was sharp but must have been melting the plastic and vapour got pulled into the motor brushes, I needed ear defenders to finish the job.
I'd think any oil or grease on the cutters would just cause more problems than it would solve because it would just make the paper dust stick. Maybe a hard wax like the good bike chain lubricants would be OK, but the solvent that carries it would likely eat all the plastic parts of a shredder. Simply running a couple sheets of cheap waxed paper through would be easy enough.
As someone else pointed out, at least we all know where the loo is. Always one for doing the right thing… I bought the correct paper shredder oil when I ordered my new machine. Then read the instructions. "Don't oil the cutters".
At the end was he hurrying off to the toilet? Did he then try and repeat the experiment to see if was just a fluke? I would of done! 🙂
