During a spate of ozone investigation I bought a few different rechargeable ozone generators intended for deodorising cupboards, wardrobes and small rooms, and also keeping fridges sterile by killing surface bacteria.
One works really well, but another was defective from the start and this one started off OK despite some design weirdness, but then failed with a faint crackling noise.
In this video I reverse engineer it, find the cause of the problem affecting many of these units and hack it to run directly on USB with no battery. (The battery MUST be removed if the USB hack is applied.)
Note that the "wind" noise when I held the ozone generator up to the microphone was the ionic breeze that would normally be moving a decent amount of air through the corona discharge and out into the area being sterilised. In this product it's been encased in a badly designed product where the designer didn't really understand the operation and blocked the airflow with an unventilated recess and fine mesh.

This comment might be a bit delayed but knowing Clive he has probably modified his fridge/freezer by now and drilled a hole through the back to tap of 5V from the fridge control PCB. On that note is his microwave oven probably Clive-enabled by now too! 🤔🤪
(My microwave boasts a heatsinked 45A SSR instead of the relay that powers the magnetron)

We have developed extra filter units to reduce ozone emissions from laser printers and now we are also installing ozone generators.😳 As a scientist I encourage you it's useless.
Put an old laser printer on your desk and you have your ozone generator and it can even print.

viruses are not living. bacteria and mould are living. bleach will disassemble viruses bacteria and mould at the atomic level. in the conventional sense of virology. great video. thanks.

"Home ozone generator" sounds like "Homo zone generator." 🤭

The ID of your pink ring … too small 😝

In the UK, I think people are advised to shoot for about 5 degrees C in the fridge. In the US, we're told to shoot for about 4.44 C OR BELOW, and 2.8 C is not uncommon as a target. Things routinely freeze at the back or the fridge, as many designs pump sub-freezing air from the freezer into the fridge area, and where it has not yet dispersed, it's sub-zero C.

Salty foods like pickles do fine back there, but I don't know if a lithium battery would be safe.

A very old analogue photocopier I de-constructed had an interesting feature in the corona discharge wires. They were gold plated to avoid corrosion and maintain the conductivity. So gold plating the pointed tip might prevent future corrosion by the ozone.

Next Time for stuff like that. Use A Large Neodymium magnet put it on top of the MESH.,. then pull apart. it can take it Clean out.. did it to a Bluetooth Speaker. i needed to Repair 😀

I think the pink one is designed to fit inside someones underpants !!!! Then if you fart it goes through the central hole and the ionizer removes the smell !!!!

"Attenuating its function"?? But its function is to make money for the manufacturer, which doesn't depend on the thing actually working. Most consumers will see the light and conclude that their food is lasting longer.
