You've probably seen these on eBay, and in the two dimensional listing pictures they look great. Maybe not so great when seen in real 3D though. But they do have novelty value.
They're basically an edge-lit acrylic panel with an outline and pattern cut/etched by what I would guess would be a laser.
The bases are available on their own and the slot of about 4mm by 80mm has a set of 10 LEDs along its length.

This also keeps the channel independent of YouTube's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

If you don’t have a laser cutter, you can simply scratch the surface of a sheet of acrylic, cut to shape or just a sheet.

Big Clive, I actually came here from Shawn Woods videos about the mouse trap I plan to buy! I then watched his video about the copy cats where I saw you mention people copying your videos. Someone in the comments below you mentioned you and this LED video.

Since I etch acrylic scenes for these LED bases with my Silhouette Curio (NOT laser etching, etching with a type of blade), I was interested in seeing how they work. I sell these at craft shows so people know how they actually look in person. Frankly, I think they look better in person than the pictures online. I love that I can come up with my own designs and personalize them. I buy generic shapes of acrylic and put the design on, since I don't have a laser, I can't really cut out the acrylic in the shape I want.

I did want to say thank you for this video, I'll now put labels on the bottom that if you use AA batteries, to REMOVE the batteries before you use USB. Honestly, I tell people it is an option to use AA batteries but I wouldn't bother, use the USB rechargeable phone batteries or a USB adapter. I have a bunch of these and have NEVER put an AA battery in them, doesn't make sense when you can use rechargeable USB phone/etc. batteries. That is how I have them lit up at shows, plugged into a USB rechargeable "phone" battery.

Oh, forgot to mention that after seeing that your remote didn't have a battery, I'm glad I pull the little clear tab from the remote AND plug the base into one of my USB batteries and show the customer that everything works BEFORE I give it to them!

Wait could it recharge rechargeable batteries when plugged in? If so thats a 5 dollar battery charger.

Welp my inpatient ass got my question answered.

Boy, these are getting cheap, and minimized. Mine, from a year ago has diode isolation for the batteries, and a more complicated circuit.

Apparently all the screws went into that ionizer you unscrewed the other day.

…when you realize the thumbnail on this video, after seeing it for days in the suggested videos, is not from a drawing or computer graphic, but an actual object… !!!

Great video Clive and a big thanks to all the additional information imparted by the comments.
Been toying with making a lit sign for video background.
First thought was to make a board like the supercomputer and do the written part in slow colour changing leds.
Another idea was the copper wire string lights sandwiched between 2 sheets of acrylic
    Now I have more ideas.
A string of slow colour change rainbow leds with uv leds intermixed.
No laser to hand but carefully scratch etch the design by hand and add some uv artists paint to act as a highlight.
Might even cheat and use ribbon led strip and fold so the leds are side by side
    The options are endless
    Thanks everyone

A nice touch would've been putting the USB port inside the battery compartment and leaving a channel for the cord to exit; that way you physically couldn't connect both power sources at once. But in reality, I don't think it would be too impressive running on batteries as the different colors would drop out at different rates.

Whenever I see one of these types of things it always reminds me of the site "Metku mods" way way back in the day. I remember he made one of these back then, probably 20+ years ago at this point.

I had to check, and holy shit the site still exists. It was back in 2002 so almost exactly 20 years. Man now I feel old…
