To magnetise a screwdriver, simply run it across one face of a magnet (either north or south face). The exposure to the single magnetic pole causes the driver to become magnetised.
To demagnetise it just run it along the edge of the magnet so that it passes through both the north and south fields simultaneously.

Too bad I lost my magnet. Hopefully it's in the shed somewhere.
Thank you!!!
This is NOT working for me, I'm using two N 52s.
thanks
can you de-magnetize a natural magnet in a similar way?
Satisfying.
Love it, best simple video yet!
Brilliant, Thank you ๐
Thank you! My pliers were driving me mad, now I can demagnetize them
I discovered this when i was a kid. I thought iwas a magic lol
amazing trick
Thank you
Really a good tip. I accidentally magnetized a metal file and the Wiha 40010 demagnetizer didn't work. This tip also did not work until I drew the entire length of the file across the tips of my fingers which kept the file about 1/8 inch from touching and also drew it in one direction about 5 times.
Great! Thanks!
Thank you so much…the time and money I've wasted on commercial de-mags…
Bah. The demagnetization doesn't work, no mater how many times I swipe along the edge.
Update:
A neodymium magnet seems to be too strong, can't swipe fast enough… ๐ Though even with a weak magnet I have trouble demagnetizing. It sometimes works when I swipe like crazy. This method is very unreliable. Requires many tries.
