So many different styles. So here's yet another, and it's quite a neat little unit.
The circuitry is very generic, but quite acceptable. The only obvious flaw with it is the ease with which the top cover can be pulled off revealing live connections.

Tha capacitor and resistor are dropping the voltage from mains to….?

    You didn't discharge the capacitor.

Clive you are lucky. I'm currently living in Portugal and bought one of these for 1,50€ in a Chinese local store. Inside it has only a 68k smd resistor, a bridge rectifier and 4 leds.

Should work fine in North America; it will only draw 10 ma at 120 Volts. That seems appropriate for a night light.

    Thrilling!

This thing is insanely dangerous, imagine a 2-yr old reaching for the lit up cap, pulling it off, then grabbing the lit up circuit board. Defines the meaning of "fry baby, fry".

I'm a little bothered by the lack of any kind of fuse. If that main capacitor shorts, it's going to get interesting. Hopefully, the components burning up doesn't set the plastic on fire.

Oh, and something funny. There is an Asian brand of cell phone called "Dodgee". I'm not sure of how it's supposed to be pronounced, but I wonder of they know what that sounds like when read in English? Dodgy?

How old were you when you received your first mains voltage shock? "I'm not 100% sure", but I think it was before I was 10. At least our line/mains voltage here is only half of yours. But we have three typical ranges: 120/240v, single phase for residential, plus 120/208 and 277/480 three phase for commercial and industrial applications. And sometimes electricians "cheat" and put a 240 volt air conditioner across a 208 volt three phase circuit.

hey at least this one has a full bridge rectifier… I was surprised by the capacitor, thought they would have gotten some cheaper piece of crap.
