I saw this LED candle in a local shop, and since it looked different to the previous Premier Dancing Flame candle I bought one to test and take to bits.
One moment please…

Can you tell me if it's possible to disconnect the coil so just the Lee works as I'm fed up of changing batteries in these candles
Hi just picked up a couple of these from a charity shop. Could you wire it up to a USB cable to avoid the need for batteries? Should I use a series resistor to lower the voltage to around 4.5v?
Thanks Clive will do.
Hi Clive, would this candle work with your Joule thief? On checking they discharge the batteries to about 0.9 v
Wife has 3 of them and wants them on every night. Although they las about 6 weeks, 9 batts every 6 weeks is a lot of batteries.
Why on earth would they use a crystal in something like this…?
I'd have to mod one of these with a bright green LED to make them look somewhat "alien", just to be different… 😛
Probably had your fingers on the oscillator pins
I think rechargeable batteries are not suitable due lack of over discharge protection.
Do a solar powered dancing flower!
Your "fingers are messing with the circuitry"? But that's what they're there for!
Using rechargeable batteries could destroy chemistry after deep discharge
I always wondered how they worked, I almost purchased one myself just to pull it apart. Thanks Clive, you just saved me $10 (NZ)
its amazing how we use a processor capable of around 1 million instructions per second, around twice as fast as the c64 processor was, in a candle, lol, i would have thought they would have run something a bit more than a simple pulse sequence myself
