Given how popular LED lamps are these days, I suppose it makes sense that the compact fluorescent lamp manufacturers wanted to find a new use for their existing glass bending equipment and lamp bases. And here it is.

That's a nice lamp!
I should get one. lol
These light bulbs are just horrible. They obfuscate my vision
I had one of these (only bigger, about 18w) and one time it just didn't turn on. Power supply's little transformer just boiled. Oh and it looked like 5w power supply maybe overdriven to output higher power.
How big is the market of people who want the aesthetics of fluoros?
Are the transformers in real CFLs of any use for anything else? I've got access to about 100+ old ones from a place converting to all LED and was wondering if it's worth stripping any out to re purpose them?
I bought 4 of these off ebay, all but 1 worked, I'm going to take the 1 that's duff to see if I can fix it, still good lights thought, I bought the warm white light, the daylight light bulbs where too cold 🙂
The switching power supply is a 3w constant current LED driver, very common in generic low wattage LED bulbs.
I purchased two similar bulbs off of Ebay about six months ago. They were really flimsy and one arrived with all the casing separated.
They work quite nicely.
I don't think the factory that makes this is re-purposing existing equipment so much as it's deliberately copying the style of the cfl bulbs.
I've taken dead cfl bulbs apart before and their is quite a substantial difference in the glass tubes in those. (cfl bulbs start as one long tube and the folded over.)
Clive,
Where can these types of bulbs be purchased and how much do they cost?
Thanks
I've a 6W CFL-style LED bulb in an outdoor lamp for almost 2 years. As the bulb is clear with the LEDs facing outwards, it appears as bright as the 60W filament bulb it replaced. The outdoor fixture has an opaque cover, so the bare LEDs are not visible. Like this one, there is no visible flicker. However, I did not like its light when I tried the bulb inside as it produces harsh shadows very similar to the dodgy corn LED bulbs.
The most important thing — this bulb does not flicker! Clive, you should focus more on non-flickering bulbs and ignore those shitty flickery ones. 😉
