This is an odd effect I discovered while firing a violet laser at random things. When I ran it across a high power LED lamp with a series of white LEDs in parallel it caused sets of LEDs to light up when one in the same parallel circuit was illuminated with the laser.
I already knew that LEDs generate a small amount of current when illuminated, but I've never seen them light other LEDs like this.

All diodes are solar panels if you try hard enough!
Wow. That is very interesting. Photovoltaic LEDs?
reminds me of the old orange neon bulbs for nightlights plugins etc or however you pronounce it over theere (neen?) I throw a rather bright cree LED headlamp at one and sometimes the dead ones light up suddenly then go out when I drawn the light away..
how does this work?
LED's, Solar Panels and Diodes are basically identical to each other.
So you can use this to find out if some of the LEDs are in parallel and if you'd kill them by shorting a broken LED. Does this work with other lasers too?
Cool. I thought only red leds can do this. Power transistors do the same thing if you open it…
Aren't Solar panels and led's essentially the same thing ? ๐
As I've understood LED:s operate as both emitters and receivers and can, in the latter case, be used to generate electricity when lit upon (preferrably with the same frequency light they put out afaik).
This could lead to such interesting concepts as OLED screens which can charge the phone/hardware by being left out in direct sunlight.
If only id seen this before I asked you the question I wouldnt feel so silly right now ๐ Im really grateful to you for answering my question regarding LEDs generating current when illuminated, it really is a strange phenomenon. maybe LED technology will advance in time to overtake the stuff solar cells are made from ๐
mabey the led's acted as mini solar pannels ? you know like when you shot the laser at the led's it ceated engugh electricity to power so,e of the other led's ?
im not an expert but im not a noob to .
Clive can you please do something vape related again please make and test a coil or mod maybe to destruction?
Reciprocity is a wonderful thing!
WHOA I TEST THIS AND IT WORKED
blew my mind!
What sort of current could you generate from a steady input to a single LED? Would using a UV LED or other colours produce quite different outputs? I'd like to see that video ๐
