One of a recently arrived set of (slightly different) meteor lights seems to have a slight power supply issue. I had it running when the power supply started making hissing noises and vapour started to squirt out of the sides and LED hole.
I unplugged it and then repositioned it under the camera to see if it would fail catastrophically for us. But it didn't. I think it may need a hand.

For information, there are some signal diodes in DO-35 packages that are rated at a higher current than a 1N4148. And indeed, some manufacturer datasheets for the 1N4148 show it rated for 200mA average rectified current.
Some of the diodes with a higher rated current are:
    1N4149 500mA 100V 500mW
    1N456A 500mA 30V 500mW
    1N458A 500mA 150V 500mW
    BAY73 500mA 125V 500mW

    TAP TAP TAP "Explode!"

There is NEVER a time when you should have to ask if we want you to make something go BANG! The answer is always: YES!

The electrolytic has a wet base so basically it pissed itself

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A Hettinger says:

Back in the early 2000's there was a whole batch of electrolytic caps where one of the manufacturers got another's fluid recipe, but didn't manage to get the whole thing. This lead to a large number of electrolytic caps to fail in the matter seen here, we saw a lot of them on mainboards. The failure mode on even those, still mostly worked much of the time, you would just get occasional segmentation faults or BSODs (depending on OS).

So the fact that on the comparatively less delicate application of meteor lights it just kept going, really isn't that shocking.

The "monologue" is very erotic. xD All that talk about orifices, bulging, squirting and leaking… sheesh!! Is that what robot porn is?

Yeah you get my vote to make it go bang! I want fire too if you can!

These videos made me buy a set, just out of curiosity on how they routed the single-sided board… I made a 20 LED charlieplexed strip, but only with lots and lots of crossing connections

I had a similar power supply blowing up. Only 12V2A. It was still working so I had some trouble finding out just what had exploded. Had to search the whole room by smell. Opened it and found a similar capasitor with bulging top and had vented in the bottom. Adding to the three chinese GU10 LED bulbs that also exploded I now have a hard time trusting anything chineese that runs on mains voltage.

most of what you say I don't understand but it sounds great ..lol your knowledge about these things is amazing thanks for passing on your knowledge. . I came across your channel looking for a video on how to wire led light strip in a utility truck tool box. after watching a few videos I'm second guessing Chinese made electrical items. and suggestions on a reliable led light company?

Probably the 400v on the cap has nothing to do with the specs.

I'm surprised you even asked, of course you should make it explode.

I think a cribs style tour of Big Clive's light emporium is required one day!

You might be interested in an ebay search of "Edison Tree Filament LED", they look pretty neat.
