I was contacted by a magician for technical advice regarding a manufactured smoke effect that was proving to be unreliable. It got me thinking about how I could do the same effect using whatever I had lying around. It just so happened I already had a small low-voltage air pump and some thick silicone vacuum tubing already, so I added an e-cig and the job is done.

The air pump is from a Chinese eBay seller called ynaan at:-

The silicone hose is specifically the 3mm internal diameter vacuum type sold for cars and the UK listing I got it from was:-

Your nan doesn't sell these anymore, but I found a similar motor rated 5 to 12 volt that has "blood pressure" as a key word, so maybe these are used in those blood pressure monitors for the inflatable arm band?

That little pump seems like it would be quite handy if you just use some bare wire and some alligator clips during a power outage had a USB power bank to just hook it up to run the bubbler on your fish tank at about 5 volts would do the job for a little while.

You could probably do it without power, just with a squeeze bulb in your wrist (or under your arm-pit).

But i bet the magician that contacted you was probably already doing that, and needed something more powerful eh?

Can anyone point me at a cheap, simple e-cig like the one in video?
I want to use it to view air flow/drafts around windows..

man i really wish you have a video on how you made everything like we saw the whole thing with the cables, and the Ebay product. But where are those Red and Black Cable Connected to? is it a 9V Battery? also I think you mention it has a switch, but can we see it so we could get a good view on how we are going to deal with this? I really want to learn badly.

I still remember a robot kids toy (about 25 years ago) that blowed smoke like that from its mouth. Only difference it was REAL SMOKE and not a vapour. The damn thing used some green colored motor oil, probably mineral and was dripping oil into a resistor inside lol.

Oh hey it's an axial pump, but with diaphrams instead of pistons. My first introduction to the concept was mashing a dead automotive A/C compressor with an 8lb sledge hammer because I wanted the metal for casting since it appeared to be casting alloy aluminium. I'd always figured they where some sort really short throw radial or inline piston pump so when I realized how it actually worked I was quite impressed.

Incase nobody got around to telling you what these pumps are for, they're often used in breast pumps (for milk collection), and sexual pumps And with the right housing could be used in Aquariums and other water pumping needs
