I think it's probably about 8 years since I first made this LED lamp. It was a shameless exercise to ram as many LEDs into the smallest base I could find. I managed 50 and powered them from a simple capacitive dropper with no smoothing capacitor to save room in the base.
It uses a very low 2W of power and runs the LEDs at around 10mA.
In recent live streams on the BigCliveLive channel:-

I've been having random lamps in the background, so I thought I'd give this one a makeover with colour changing LEDs just before I did a stream. It's an interesting effect because the LEDs prefer a smoothed supply so they can keep their position within the sequence. With the choppy unsmoothed supply they sometimes randomly revert back to the starting colour in the sequence (red) especially when exposed to bright external light.
The original LEDs used in it were a mixture of warm and cold white LEDs removed from cheap imported Christmas lighting strings.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-

This also keeps the channel independent of YouTube's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

They are nice with the randomness of colour.

Big Clive for me on some days is like having a moment to feel the sunshine on my face and enjoying that in the moment and nothing else. He said, "eBay is the dumpster for China." Simple but incredibly prophetic. The US, where I am is the dumpster for eBay. A few months ago I had never even seen a circuit except on a photo or in passing. Watching this and a couple of other channels, in those few months I've gone down a rabbit hole that has a system in place to intercept literally hundreds of pounds of electronics that fixed, distributed to those in need of something, many being children, saved from their imminent demise, and ultimate trip back to China again where the insanity can be perpetuated. To reference some pop culture, as surely as the "Architect" was there to balance the equation, and the "Oracle" was there to unbalance it, I am here to disrupt that status quo by any peaceful means necessary and restore the freedoms of your minds and souls. I live in a town of just a few thousand, and I'll never keep up with goes through this new and completely unplanned system. Imagine it exponentially across the country. I can't list all of the items, but right now I have 740 pounds of consumer electronics, and 75 % so far has been the stat, will be repurposed or restored by a Dude who is an artist (we're mostly kinda flaky) and never touched this stuff in 2019. I used to enjoy saying, "You've met me at a very strange time in my life." for comic value … well, it's not really making me laugh, and I mostly feel like saying, "we've all lost our damn minds at this time in my life." and I only laugh to stop the feeling of terror. Not fear for myself, but everyone who can't see it and will be around my children every day as they go out into the world. I never want to be a bummer, but I felt compelled to expand upon Big Clive's profound observation. They come and go like Keiser Sose, so stay on your toes folks, and maybe send a friend down the rabbit hole with me. You may very well save the world. ✌️

So glad to see a video featuring those light sensitive colour changing LEDs. I have a set in my garden that were originally solar. When the solar panel unit corroded badly, I hooked them up to a DC power adapter instead, on 24hrs, not just after dark. Turned out that in the day time they just stay blue, then resume colour changing dusk till dawn, which I rather like. I found it all rather fascinating – so next I hit them with a laser pointer and found that the LED turns off, only to come back on a short time later – bonus fun!

Hi Clive love watching your videos however i would love to see the outtakes you know the ones where you might get a small shock (as we all do when engineering with electricity) thanks

I dont understand, how does light effect the circuit? What part does it actually effect, and what effect is it having? Can you explain a little more? I was very surprised by that.

Clive I saw you have a Maplin Gold Vernier caliper. It is ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING how it works. Mine was playing up so I dismantled it and was flummoxed as to how it works. No grating no optical device just a VERY CLEVER PCB layout and IC. I know you would find this absorbing.

Clive a quick question, why do you prefer warm white over a more neutral cool white?
For me warm white is ok but I prefer cool white as to me cool white gives a better clarity
