I saw this in a local shop and bought it to see if it really did rotate, and it does. The construction is actually surprisingly good, with a very weird bit of minimalist circuitry to switch the motor.

Hey bigclive fans… Is there anyone else in the webisphere who can explore and explain how gadgets work with such clear and entertaining detail? – and… wouldn't this thing be great just about 4 times larger without the metal shroud. Thanks Clive for another great video.

'Now, whilst I left this thing on at night, it has appeared that my parents 7 chakras has been physically removed from their bodies. It has also appeared that my body has developed an extra chromosome, which has an unusual effect on me, as I can no longer move my left hand. Plus it feels like I have a limited amount of time before I turn into a interdimensional super human. Weird. Anyways, let's have a look inside this orb shall we."

This looks like a pretty nice light, wish I could find one in the US.

That's a nice piece of kit, especially the gear driven orb. I'd like to get one but I don't travel much lately. Any chance you can share some useful keywords from the packaging? The usual eBay searches return a variety of rotating orbs, but obviously not the same one.

we've had variants of these for years. Now if only the solar panels would bother to last instead of turning yellowish white.. I prefer the color changing ones. but the latest one simply blinks a different color Blinks! very annoying. Yours looks way better however

Normal LED works also with this circuit although a little bit dimmer than in normal circuitry._

Hey Clive… I found a "new source" of "fun" LEDs… next time you come across an orphaned "gaming" keyboard, hold on to it for the leds under the keys. If kept intact ledwise, one can plug it into the computer and use the appropriate software to bring it to life as an interesting display… add in extra leds to fill in the blank spots for a more uniform look.
