Initially I thought this breaker may have suffered heat damage from a loose connection, but it's clearly been much more serious than that.

    Wow, UK breakers are definitely different than North American. It looks like ours have heavier casings. But I’m not sure there’s as much inside either. Sounds like you need a care package from the US with a 120V 15 or 20 amp breaker.

    A few years ago I noticed the main breaker box in the house I share with my brother, who is an electrician, was hot to the touch and smelled like something was burning. He took the cover off and saw that the insulation on one of the main wires coming in was smoking. Turns out a main breaker had failed in a bad manner. The fire department came, luckily didn't have to do anything. Half of the circuits in the house were dead until he installed a new breaker. We were so lucky that it happened when we were home and I noticed the smell.

    This " modern " safety device might have set light to his house .. The " old skool " ceramic re-wireable ( plug in ) fuse links are MUCH MUCH safer, ( if you use the CORRECT size fuse wire ! ), but amazingly ( ? ) no longer allowed in new build UK properties !

    At first, I thought that the breaker may have been used to interrupt a DC current, and the arc didn't extinguish. Now, I think that the bi-metallic spring didn't bow enough to trip. It just glowed red hot, until it melted the rest if the internals. That much current would also explain the burnt insulation on the solenoid wire.
