My old bench PSU cables had a resistance of about 0.6 ohms between the cable resistance and the original banana plugs. That might not sound much, but at high current and low voltage it makes a difference, and that's especially obvious when testing LED torches or flashlights with the PSU in place of the battery to get an indication of current.
I decided to make a set of new cables with better connectors and cable, but couldn't decide between 1mm vs 2.5mm CSA (roughly 17 to 13 AWG). In the end the decision was made by the discovery that the silicone rubber 2.5mm cable wasn't what it seemed!
With the new banana plugs and cable the resistance of the leads and connections has dropped to 0.03 ohms, which is much more acceptable.

I'm typically the last person you should ask about electrical things, but I recently discovered if you pull apart modems, sometimes the areal cable is made of silver! I used that on one of my projects and filmed it with hilariously good results!

Well, to protect your devices I am sure your power supply could be set to limit the current?
Also another nice way to measure low resistances like that. Set up a limit to the current and measure the voltage drop through the shorted wires. It also would enable you to 'see' with a thermo camera where the highest resistance would be placed at.
And about the length of the cables… As soon as you need them urgently they are a few centimeters too short.

I do a lot of bits and pieces with 12v solar panels and related stuff (up to about 20A) and what horrifies me is the price of cables and the frequency with which people sell multicore copper coated wire as copper. It's not even copper coated aluminium, I have some 'copper' cable which's conductor actually degrades to a black powder over a year of exposure to air….in the shed – so variable humidity.
We're those cables different in both gages among wire strands, construction, & materials such as Al & Cu or alloys of such? Worth comparing properties & specification then investigating such factors for consideration & application. Prolly theoretically & then physically determine conductance, resistance, & other properties beside operating performance either ideal, practical, & actual since environment & purpose of application along with connectors & connections also have an influence. There's proper technique also paramount, even how those cables are constructed & connected. As you demonstrated by achieving what may seem fractional in term of units but significant in terms of percentage & performance.

The thing with the tiny wires with big insulation is that they are usually for measuring stuff where voltage drop is not too important and as such have very high safety for working with somewhat high voltages
