While assembling a DIY power wall he had an incident when his friend accidentally drove a screw through a lithium module, resulting in explosive failure.
With lithium cells, the danger isn't with the lithium itself, but the energy they store. When you puncture a cell it results in very high current flow that evaporates the flammable electrolyte and then ignites it with sparks from the short circuit. When working with them it's a good idea to discharge them as low as possible, so there is less energy to dissipate if you have an incident.

He was still keeping it by bare hand xD There will be serious injury if more will do thermal runaway.
This is why I love DIY battery stuff.
Why didnโt they get the the whole unit and themselves out of there. Hydrogen Fluoride is released when the batteries burn โฆ HF is nasty. There are also other nasty compounds released, but HF is probably the worst.
why my power wall sits in its own concrete block -rock wool covered in cement board shed away from my house with a exterior fire extinguisher to flood it. The number of evs and power wall that catch fire and take out houses is larger than you think even if this one was just someone who didnt think it through.
Wow, scary stuff. That's why my DIY 10KW 48V 18650 powerwall is on wheels, quick disconnects, metal frame and covers and the packs screwed to a plycem cement board. I have it installed right next to the garage door so I can disconnect and roll that sucker outside in a jiff (If I'm lucky enough to be around when/if catches on fire of course ๐). Each 18650 have a 5A fast-blow fuse and the whole system is designed big enough so no individual cell is ever pushed past .5 C (4.6a). I also always use new cells. Had a few scares with used stuff and done with them.
Happy Anniversary ๐
I love how they just watch the pack burn without doing anything. Luckily it didn't worsen.
Sorryโฆ.. in a nanosecond, that whole board would have been launched into space, followed by my record breaking sprint out of there. ๐ฑ
they handled it pretty well
Guy on the backside with the drill, definitely put a screw through that battery module.
trying to blow li-ion fire out hah…
Didn't even get up from his chair ๐ cool as fuck
