This little light is cheap and trashy, but it works and has scope for improvement.
Easiest improvement would be to add a much bigger lithium cell, so it lasts longer between charges. There's a void of about 6mm under the PCB for the battery. A classic Nokia style cell does fit in the space.
This unit uses an unusual chip that seems to be dedicated to the function of a PIR light. It interfaces with a common PIR sensor and seems to deal with detecting signal fluctuations and timing without any external capacitors other than a basic filter. I've not managed to pin down the exact chip yet. The most notable oddity is the use of pins 2+ and 4- for power.
Searching on your local eBay for the following keyword string should find them:-
LED Motion Sensor Light Night PIR Battery Wireless Cabinet Stair Lamps Magnetic
Target price is around ยฃ$โฌ5.
The chip has been identified as an mx8098g

by the title, I thought it was going to be something much different ๐
but as usual, very interesting little device, thanks for another interesting video Clive.
keep em coming ๐
i have a very similar unit and it has a 8 pin chip marked as FT100 104A00 if that is of interest
I see those circular traces on the board, there's your induction! That's a two-turn coil…
Can't check it right now but based on the resistance values it might be the: MX8098 or the
NSA3182FT100
Does it work backwards, though? When it shines, does a man come?
I love when I search for mx8098g the first hit is this video lmao.
Do they sell a model for "when a woman comes, it shines"? Or is that so rare they dont make it anymore haha
Ohhhhh…the many many things I could say
So it ignores women? Cool!
I've got half a dozen of these dotted around the house. Saves me having to fumble for the light switches in the middle of the night when I get up for a piss.
Based on your search words, I looked on eBay and found a pair of these that were cheaper than your estimate. What was even odder, the vendor of these had an ad that was even cheaper but didn't show up in the search. I only noticed because the "related" ones had an ad for a pair that were cheaper. When I checked it, it was the same vendor. Not sure why the search didn't show that one up but no matter. It arrived 2 weeks after ordering.
The only differences were no switch and round magnets rather than a square one. Oh, and only 6 LEDs rather than 8.
I stuck one of them up under the ceiling in front of my entrance door the other night. When I went out that night, it worked well but I was disappointed to find that it had dropped by the time I got back. Seems the glue holding the magnet into the device isn't that strong.
Anyway, how long does one of these last before it needs to be recharged? Say, without it being used?
But how does it know when your having a five knuckle shuffle?
I wonder which of the resistors, if any, determines the length of time it stays lit once it's turned on? On the ones I have I changed the resistor from 47k to 10k to reduce the on time from 20 seconds down to 8 seconds. That extended the time to a month between charges. Thanks, Clive.
