A newer variant on the solar charged camping light, with the added feature of a standard micro USB socket for charging the internal lithium cell with either the solar panel or a standard USB charger.
Here's a general purpose (buy it now, cheapest first) eBay link.

The solar panel that comes with this device is terminated in a micros USB plug, so it has the potential to be plugged directly into a low quiescent current device to keep it topped up.

just got a few of these, striped one down, mine has a 3.7v li-ion batt in, opened up the solar panel, no diode in it, as I wont to use these panels for re-charging other batts, I need to put a diode init, can I put any old diode in it, please, watch a lot of your vids, am learning slowly, many thanks Keith

neat gadget but dont expect directly plugging smartphone into solar panel which exceeds 6v. charging will stop and high voltage warning will appear. panel gives in full sun some 120mA.

I'm always so glad when I see solar cell technology being significantly less of a joke these days. It was such a trash pipe dream when I was a kid.

The Luci lights work great, solar recharge self contained

At least they are including a good battery, and you get the neat panel etc. I consider it a good deal overall, a person can rework the inside to make it neater if they want. This will create a constant light as well, not flashing fast like a lot of other LED's, because this one is directly connected to a DC battery without any switching etc. I know we can't see the fast flashing on still objects, but you can actually make out the fast flashing when you wave your hand in the air etc, you notice your hand is ghosting like a computer cursor on the monitor, it's making like hundreds of little jumps when it's lit, just like the mouse cursor makes it's jumps with the refresh rate. Meaning ultimately, the human eye can tell there is fast flashing if the object is in movement, and constant light is a lot nicer on the eyes for objects in movement, because there are no frames anymore, it's just a continuum.

These smaller cells were the size for the older generation mobile phones, they usually equate to something around 4Wh of power. This is a lot for the size, it's the equivalent of 3 combined NIMH AA batteries, but it's even better yet again, because the self discharge is low, lithium cells hold their power very well.

I think inside a tent a person really only needs a light head that has about 6 of the 20mA 5mm typical LED's. So basically 120mA of LED power in total, obviously use a diffuser to merge the beams into one diffused beam, and it should be able to run off one of these old style mobile phone batteries for around 8 hours, which is excellent.

The advantage of this setup is that you can use a smaller common resistor as well, like a quarter or half watt 8.2ohm resistor.
Obviously it would be a good idea to have 2 of the lights, in case you don't get an opportunity to charge the other one, or it's a shady day etc, so having 2 of them is probably the best idea.
The metal hook is also obviously superior, allowing for a more rigid anchoring.

    Overall, very neat idea.

So I got a little bit curious and started to look at the ebay search. The first of this unit listed (after skipping over some filament-type products) was a little different, in that it had a round connector for the charging port and specified a NiMH battery! Of the next half-dozen or so that I looked at some had the round connector, some had the micro as with the unit you showed here, and NONE of them specified the type of battery.

I wonder if you could use the solar panel, to charge a mobile phone?
