When I first saw this in a local shop I thought it was a bit of a gimmick. I initially expected it to use the circuit board out of a flame lamp or maybe even just have flickering LEDs. But it's using exactly the same flame effect system as some of the full size electric fireplaces use.
I'm currently in accommodation provided by work, so the videos will look and sound a bit different for a while.

Unbelievable, flimsy and a right con job!
Thank you for taking your time with the video. My lantern stopped rotating but it’s still lighting up. Any idea of how to fix it?
I bought one yesterday in a local supermarket for -50% price ‒ it was the last one ‒ and I noticed one weird thing immediately: a wire came out of the bottom and a small bare momentary push switch was on it ‒ yes, it was just dangling around like that! 😨 I put 3×AA batteries in it, and noticed the effect is not working fully, the motor not turning at all ‒ uh-oh! 😐 I took it apart, and what I saw was weird: the momentary push switch was connected to two hidden CR2032 coin cell batteries, which originally was the "Try me" in-shop functionality! 😨 Okay then… 😔 So, why is the motor not turning? 🤔 Are the wires somehow faulty? Nope. Then I started trying rotate the shaft manually ‒ yes, the multimeter says everything is okay. So, I reconnected the motor, switched it on, and tried to help the shaft turning ‒ bingo: the speed reducing gears was so stiff, the motor couldn't start at all! So, now I have a fully working "fireplace lantern"! 😏 🔥 🏮 The only thing is: the noise of the motor can be heard when this thing is operating, it's quiet, but not silent. 🔊 😐
Nothing like Big Clive to start off my day!
Thank you for this video, I'm going to open one of these up and fit it inside a decommissioned Victorian fireplace for effect!
So simple but so beautiful
Always wondered about these. Thanks Clive
Where can I find small reflective plastics. What is it name?
Well…. IMHO, the perfect ending would have been to reassemble it and then set it alight (while running of course) by soaking it with lighter fluid!!!!
Now THAT'S an ending!!!! 8^D
Hello,
When I plug my electric fireplace only red lights come on (usually it's green, orange and red) and it beeps. The led light board comes on but too dim. I don't see the motor rotate. What could the problem be, please?
Thank you.
Thank you so much
Clive, I suspect that your clamp Amp-meter cannot detect DC Amps, only AC, (look at the sign on the Amp-meter followed by the ~ sign…)
Is the motor noisy?
Someone should replace the wood with glass chunks and radioactive symbol sticker and orange film with green one
That really is a neat little lamp. I might have to look into getting one myself Kama though I doubt I'll take it apart. It was much more fun watching you take yours apart!
On Amazon this is described as having "6 super-bright LEDs".
Dimplex do a fake log effect fire called "Optimist" which uses vapourised water to produce a very realistic flame / smoke effect. Love to know how they work. They are somewhat expensive though to buy and destroy immediately just to satisfy inquisitiveness!
