A look at the circuitry inside a REAL Snap Power LampLighter night light plate. Also a comparison with the PCBs of two clones. The real thing is UL listed. Thanks to Leon for sending this for a teardown.
Here's the website for the real thing, with it's very characterful advert:-

If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-

This also keeps the channel independent of YouTube's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Devices like this are sold by a telemarketing company in America under the name Night Angel.
The fact that it just kind of presses onto the screws terrifies me
I cannot believe that the snap power is remotely safe
Well that was weird, I recognised from looking at clive's hands that I was looking at an old video. 😅
Thank you for answering most of the questions I had as far as Snap power(SP) vs all others, I’ve had 4 SP outlets installed in my home for about 5 years w/o any issues, but always wondered why the higher cost for seemingly such a elegant simple device, and now I believe you’ve answered it ,, better quality and engineering, I recently (3-4 months ago) purchased 2 night light covers from Lowe’s by a company called Westek, called Lumicover @ $10 each, , 1 works perfectly the other after 2 months only comes on dim, about 1/3 of full brightness, SP also slipped on the outlet w/o much fuss compared to the other. Conclusion : I still think Snap power could be a bit more economical, but, you get what you pay for sometimes , seeing the components of each tell the story,,,,,, stay safe, stay well, stay sane everyone, 😆😂🤪,
“All clones are different” 🙂
I'm not a fan of anything that pisses away power needlessly even if it's a very small amount. It's amazing how it all adds up.
So glad you posted this! My Snap Power light failed. I was able to disassemble and discovered that the fuse was blown and the big capacitor had failed. I jumpered the fuse and replaced the surface mount cap with a small 100nF cap and all is good again!
Oh No I purchased Chinese clones 🙁 I rather buy good quality so I’m gonna have to reorder the Snap Brand.
I watched this too late to stop my purchase of some clones that are not safe… but I watched this before installing them. Wasted money is better than a house fire.
Are the lower value components cheaper or is it just poor design?
Thank you for posting this comparison. I purchased the Snap and avoided the clones. Placing the Snap in our hallway, which gets little daytime light, puts the LED's on most the time.
Thanks very nice review! I would go buy the original version for safety!
You know, if I were designing this thing, I wouldn't use any LEDs at all. I'd use a couple of little neon glow-lamps, NE-2 or that sort.
I've just installed one of the USB charger outlet plates offered by Snap Power. I got it for 10¢ from a thrift store, but it seems to work OK.
