I added this item to an order because it appeared to be a 5V PSU in the standard housing used for many 3W LED drivers. I was wondering if it was going to be based on similar circuitry fudged for a 5V supply.
It turns out to be a full-on switchmode with opto-isolator feedback to a genuine SMPSU control chip. A THX208.
I would not classify this PSU as being suitable for powering stuff that was being handles, but for a 5V supply within equipment it seems acceptable. The clearance on the PCB is around 3mm.
The ebay listing I bought this item from was:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271950038613

Similar to your “Quicktest,” is the “Keynector.” I have had the “Keynector” for many years.
I used mine for testing mains powered equipment/devices for testing during construction/modification or repairs where these equipment/devices were an internal part of a machine and connected to power by the internal wiring.
I use one of these to power an ESP-based IR blaster. Glad to see it's actually decent inside
The link for the ebay listing actually worked this time, as opposed to getting a "not found" page which has been the case with some earlier items. Switching from the UK site to the US one gave me the price in $, and the unit pictured does not look like the one you show, no box and no wires, but those are apparently still out there and readily available.
MTBF 2 years.. hm. Not in my backyard 🙂
Very cute little device, I actually like it
5.O (0) ZERO NOT O DRIVES ME TO DRINK WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT!! ROLLING AROUND THE HOUSE NO TRYIN TO FIND SOMETHING TO DRINK!!! JUST SAYING OLD ONE LEGGED JOSEPH T RETIRED NAVY
I wish I could get a quick test in the US. It would be much more practical than my salvaged AC power cord and knockoff Wago terminals. (And safer if I forget to unplug it.)
I had a 5v module exactly like this one connected with no load. After 30 minuets it caught fire. Wouldn’t recommend it.
Do you use the things you take apart in the videos on a normal basis, because you pay quite a lot for things every video and it would not be very 'Pocket Friendly' if you just chuck it away!
Kind Regards!
i wonder if it can power my computer… Hmmmmmm…..
using a 6W 12v version of these driving 2X 3W LED strips, quite impressed with it. Nice and tiny.
