Some items are worth buying on eBay just for one part. In this case an aquarium heater comes with a neat 100W spiral heating element inside it. Or, as mentioned in the video, the whole heater could be mounted through the side of an enclosed tank with a suitable sealing gland to act as a low power heating element with a rugged glass body. The wattages available are typically 50, 100, 200 and 300W with the main difference being the length of the heater section.

I have one from the early 70's and a couple from the early 80's, all still working just fine. 🙂

I did have to reseal a 70's fish tank about 30 years ago though. In those days before silicone sealant, fish tanks here in Australia usually had painted (often hammer finish) metal frames and used putty to hold the glass in. May have been the same linseed oil putty used in wooden window frames perhaps?

My favourite tank was more expensive and a bit special.
It was made with a lovely stainless steel frame, and the putty holding the glass in had dried out, slightly cracked, and so the tank started seeping just a minute amount.
I simply dried the tank thoroughly and applied the new fangled silicone sealant over the internal joins. Hasn't failed since.

I had one in my tank. I went on holiday and when ii came back the tank was empty and remains of boiled fish were on the gravel at the bottom of the tank.

I have one of these with a bung on the end to fit a demijohn to aid fermentation in cool areas.

Hm.. I've got some Aquaneat brand 50 watts and thinking about using em in my 3 gal shrimp tanks. Worked well in my 10 and 20 gal long but 3 gal is much smaller. Do y'all think making a temp controller would be necessary?

if its 150k for a 100w heater, what is it for a 50W, anyone knows, my resistor is broken and i cant find any info on it..

I drilled out rubber demijohn bungs to run the mains cable through. They fit nicely into wide neck of about 50% of my demijohns and set at low temperature end don't over heat the wort.

Used to be the top of the thermostat clamped to the tank's top edge. Obviously been awhile since I had a fish tank. But same concept.

I use these with digital thermostats to keep my tanks warm, just turn the knob in so it stays on period and let the thermostat do the controlling

This video motivated me to disasemble my broken quarium heater, I found that it failed due to 2 ceramic caps short circuiting and burning up inside. That aquarium heater was a legit one with certifications, so be very careful with chinese copys if using outside water

For certain things you have to buy name brand stuff and look at reviews online first before buying

I have had six of these exact heaters, 4×200w and 2×300w, for six years. Zero leaks.
