This is a slightly different version of the video segment I did on the Ashens channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf3Cb3UB5hc as it is geared more towards technical people and leaves the lithium battery information out. It's notable that this is the first time I've realised that Superchip actually do this awesome little power bank controller that fixes my main issue with the older style power banks. Namely disconnecting the battery completely at the low voltage cut off point like a DW01 and MOSFET combo.

Dollar store in the USA adds VAT after sale making things more than a dollar 🙂
Got these in Canada at Dollarama for 4 bucks
What do I expect for a pound? I expect what is advertised. If they advertise a specific capacity, then a specific capacity I damn well expect.
I took apart a power bank with this same enclosure earlier today (it does look awful generic) and found that the battery wasn't soldered in. Being the inquisitive chap I am, I took it out and when I went to put it back in, I accidentally did so the wrong way round.
The PCB started smoking IMMEDIATELY, so naturally I took the battery back out. Then put it back in the proper way round. And curiously enough, it still SEEMS to work.
Took a closer look at the PCB, one part had slightly melted. That part being, by what I was able to discern, labelled "8205S", which points toward a MOSFET of some description. Now I have virtually no idea what a MOSFET even IS, but if the thing still works with that bit kerploded, how important can it be?
Or perhaps more importantly, should I never ever ever ever ever use this one again?
rip poundworld.
Something very similar to the old version of this is still sold in Germany for 8€ (way overpriced just as everything related to electronics here). I tried plugging in a little USB fan rated for 500mA and the power bank circuit was dead almost instantly (No resetting overcurrent protection, just dead).
Where do you get your usb torch from
the new version cuts out then restarts at 2A
If you want to use these to swap in a good quality battery, I think that the Poundland ones are better. They tend to have a a worse battery, but the charge circuit is nicer and the enclosure is slightly nicer too. Don't forget plenty of Kapton tape to guard agains shorts – you don't want one of these to short circuit, particularly not while in your pocket.
I got 29% for a full charge of PoundLand battery charger towards my iPhone 📱, no being funny about this but, I actually bought another outta PoundLand £1, same colour & black taped the both of them together, that way double the power for £2, you can also black tape 3 or 4 together aswell (only for cheapness) 👍🏽
Your acsent is so soothing
I have got a cheap power bank from Real (A Supermarket here in Germany) and it puts out 1.75 Volts to check if there is a load…
I bought an expensive Neoxeo power bank (£20 for a supposed 4400mAh). It is technically rubbish, but it looks nice! It allows you to use it while its charging (gets quite warm) and It doesn't disconnect the battery. The boost converter drops out and it continues powering whatever is plugged in. I'm tempted to plug in a dummy load and just leave it to see what happens…
Yawning…..
shit!!!!!!!!!
