This module looks so good at first. Chunky terminals and relay and then a very modular design with integrated switchmode supply allowing a wide operating voltage range. Add the distinct display/interface section and an intriguing thermocouple to serial converter and it looks the part. But looks aren't everything....

Remember a thermocouple is a differential sensor with a sensing junction and somewhere a reference junction (where the special termocouple wires connect to conventional wires). So when you short the thermocouple input you expect the reading to go to room temperature, (the temperature it thinks the reference junction is at). When the short took it down to a low reading was the board colder by any chance?

“Testing” was probably “does it turn on?” And “error codes” are so much work… people should know better than to do something like set the temps wrong 😛
It looks like something I would've thrown together in Fritzing when I was 14.
This maybe just a stupid American thing, but we don't power our thermostats from mains. Our HVAC units generally supply 12V-24V DC directly to the thermostat. That just seems like a more efficient, and less blowy uppy option?
Aren’t there 50/60 suppression in these specialized ADC chips?
Same with debouncing in „keyboard controllers“.
The pcb size is massive (etching that in UK would cost more then a hole badly designed module from china… )
I have previously designed simple esp8266 run thermostat with thermistor for a kurdish fast food "cash and cary" fridge room to get attention of everyone if temperature goes above certain level (Sending emails, ringing whtsapp, upto switching alarm horn if it reaches 5 degrees or goes above -2 for more then one minute). Diferent levels dependent on how bad it is.
Its been running for two years now and measurements are still within 1 degree of what official regged meter says.
Mine point is that for the human level temperatures putting thermocouple just causes trouble/makes design pointlessly over-complicated.
and if you are working on high temperatures, considering the electricity/fuels) cost, getting good quality equipment does not make as much cost in comparison.
Makes me wonder considering the manufacturing cost, if its on ebay because after it was build it was found too dogy for sale, so they might be getting rid of the useless stuff to recover at-least some money, rather then paying a waste company…

At £7.32 it's a bargain. The parts are worth more than that, so it would be well worth buying to cannibalise for the components.
