A rather neat (albeit quite annoying) LED lamp purchased from ebay, that has three 1W LEDs (red, green and blue) mounted behind a rotating lens on the front that projects a HUGE number of moving dots of light onto the surrounding surfaces. This is pretty neat actually.
It's very simple. A switchmode LED driver and the motor is just tagged across the DC to the LEDs.
Don't do what I did and try and turn the lens by hand, since it's got plastic gears that can skip and get damaged easily.
It's also worth noting that it turns quite fast. I tried tapping it over different LEDs with the 2V across the red LED making it run slowest, but it made it very "jumpy" due to the crappy plastic gearing.

Wow, I found a classic Clive video! Also wow! How much our beloved Clive has changed over the years!
I have a similar lamp bought from our local Wilco store about six years ago. I've never taken it apart, but it doesn't often see the light of day – I find the melee of coloured light traces really messes up my eye sight, and "does me nut in".
Oooooops
Wait, 8v? So could I run this whole thing off a 9v battery?
yeah… they are sold white label.
if you rotate the lens by hand, the motor generates power and the LEDs work.
what kind of motor inside?
Mine no rotating
If my disco bulb not revolving but all led's are glowing. What is the reason
3.50€ china bazar.
I recently bought a Christmas tree topper with essentially one of these inside of it. I haven't any idea what happened, but after only an hour of use the dome stopped rotating. Went back and exchanged it for another one, stopped rotating again (this time in under 10 minutes). I'd really like to bust it open to see what in blazes is getting stuck, but I'm probably better off just getting a refund.
Mines stopped rotating
Bought one yesterday, I'm thinking of getting more to try and add more colours, or try to smooth the motor function out, it's very juddery
mortar no rotet
I have something identical to this that I paid £11 for… I wanted ambient lighting in my game room but it spins so fast I think I'm going to have a seizure whenever I look at the telly. Any idea how to slow it down? Or is my only choice to cut the motor?
