Our new LED street lighting heads just installed two days ago. It turned out that there was a high resistance tap on an overhead line. Possibly due to an overgrown tree.

so, they installed party lights? sweet!

Aaaand this is why I maintain that "upgrading" to LED street lights when your existing gear is working perfectly fine is a huge waste of taxpayer's money.

I'm all for saving energy but when the energy saving measure is to not work at all it's not a very good solution. It at least has to last long enough to pay back in savings for crying out loud!

I hate the leds in my street bring back the sodium ..

    ddddddd drop the bass!!!

Man I hate those. Not only are they a nightmare for amateur astronomy, their light is also the most depressing white you could imagine, especially in a snowy winter night.

Good old low pressure sodium will always be the way

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Martin Pickard says:

Is this a limited current supply issue? Problems with starting current/ capacitive inrush being limited by small cables or incorrect cutout ratings?
If the previously installed sodium lamps were taking similar current (or likely more) why would it now be restricted?
Is this an 'intelligent' street light management control system not set up correctly?

They are smart bulbs and have lost their WiFi connection. Lol.

Is the strobing effect happening due to a bad ballast or is some sort emergency thing

Happens in France and Italy too !
(And I think it's either faulty drivers or faulty LED chips as it usually happens after a few years, not straight after installation).

I think the problem is a bad capacitor, does not hold power long enough, what do you think Clive?

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Bonk says:

It’s the power saving mode, runs only half the time of a standard led…

I personally love those sodium glow lamps. They don't mess up your sleep.

I have outside my window a lamp with the same glow as the new LED lamp on the video… That pure crisp, cold, and white light. I call it full moon glow… I swear to God. I had to buy those accordion blackout blinds, black out curtains, and even had to hang up on the edges of the curtains black scarves to block out that disgusting LED full moon shade of light.

Just to get sleep, and be able to sleep at night.

Before, I got all of the curtains, I could see a faint, yet bright "white light" outside my window… I always thought it was the moon. Until, I said WTF! And I went outside to see what it was. Low and behold… A crisp, white, cold, bluish hue LED street lamp.

We had that problem, it was caused by volt drop in long street lighting circuits. Discharge lamps like LPS are just slightly dimmer when the volt drop is large, but LEDs are binary: either on or off. Problem was solved by changing to a more tolerant range of LED luminaIres

Where i live at, our city has upgraded to these but instead of flashing they are either bright white, a high intensity blue or purple similar to what is used in aquariums and its quite annoying. Also sometimes they will be a bright white when they are first installed then after a few months they go to that deep black light blue or purple.

All those irritating blinking streetlights in dystopian media suddenly make sense. They're not defective, they're designed to do that for atmosphere.

So here we are in dystopia.
