By request:- A basic guide to identifying components and their functions for those who are new to electronics. This is a work in progress, and I welcome feedback from you guys on whether I should break it down into more manageable chunks. I've kept the maths to a minimum, since it can be off-putting to someone just getting started in electronics.

I'm trying to repair an ECU from my V8 engine and thus save myself £2000 for a replacement ECU …a diode has broken on the circuit board …it provides a reading of 158 when tested on a multi-meter…Can I assume that I need a 15V replacement ?

Resistor = Saturn = restrict flow, time delay
Capacitor = Jupiter = layered insulator, surface area, electrolytic capacitor, smooth sine output, temporary battery
Diodes = Rahu = one way valve
Transistors = Mars = 3 pin, amplifier, switch, mosfet
