Early in the show we had seriously stormy weather that managed to drive water horizontally to the point that some control units with OLED displays that are normally well sheltered, got wet. This rendered two of the displays inoperative, but we found they are a very standard display module now and were able to order replacements online and fix the units. So here's a look at one of the dead OLED displays.

Iโve seen a few RIT displays from PURE radios where the actual pixels fail and short out. You can see the failed/shorted cell in the panel.

chip on flex
Yup, that piece of 'glass' is a silicon chip!
Its a way of integrating active circuitry on a flex board so that you can integrate line multiplexers/drivers onto the connector and make it easy to integrate into something thin and small without wasting board space for the driver chip(s).
That chip that you say is "strange" is a standard COG (Chip-on-Glass) module.

Clive, the 'strange' device is called a chip on flex controller and is a silicon display driver IC mounted to the polyester connection circuit (which is basically a flexible PCB). So the designer of the equipment you took this from will send parallel (or sometimes serial) control messages to the IC and the IC will contain image RAM, a character generator ROM and multiplexer circuitry to drive the display matrix rows and columns.

That piece of glass is an active IC used since 2000 in almost every mobile phone.
SMASH IT! I wanna see a grid of metallised whatevers, because I've never seen one before. It'd be nice to see inside, what most people probably never have. It's that or I'm gonna end up vandalising a photocopier and getting arrested.
