We all know that electronic cigarettes and smoke machines create a plume of fog when used, but how does that effect actually happen?
This video is about a wide range of atmospheric effects used in the entertainment industry, and how they are created.

hmmm. im still sat here with a litre of glycerol and a litre of de-ionised water scratching my head.
the amazon bloke just bought me a fog machine, for science reasons (honest) and i knew there was an old clive vid about them.
Brian Johnson (of AC/DC) once sang a song about losing a marble 🙂
What is the little fog machine you're using?
I've had and used both and both being powerful ecig were from 200 to 300w
A fogger uses a pump and heat exchanger mine being 2000w and an ecig as you said has a coil a tank a mod which holds the batteries and the difference is the person pulls and inhales in order to bring the liquid through into cotton to then atomise it's very different man
Better also thank the drug dealers for those scales, I know certain resins need exact weight but I try to stick with two part pours. Not always possible but I got scales for them if need be. Also could this syste m be adapted for use in Models, like model steam trains?
I have a very big interest in Steam Railways and while I know a few good "Smoke" units and methods (one that is extremely toxic but was only ever used on Thomas The Tank Engine filmings , yeah bit hanger with gauge 1 railway sets and cameras David Mitton was lucky to have been with us as long as he was. To say nothing of Gary Anderson's works like Thunderbirds, the Times must of been horrible but it was a great series.) But atomizer based systems appeal greatly to me because it is true water vapor, Steam in a cooler visible from which as a loved of steam feel so much more authentic.
You are such a natural teacher.
You explain things so clearly and in a way that makes anyone just tune in and listen.
Its like watching a very interesting TED talk, you get so involved with whatever your going on about.
👍
If you think it looks cool when you open your freezer, you'd think it would look amazing when you open a low temperature freezer made for tissue samples and the like. Sadly most of those are kept in areas of low air humidity, so you never really get the fog machine look, but they do create a light mist when opened.
Now liquid nitrogen on the other hand…
Absolutely riveting! I've wondered about smoke machines for years, but am slightly less interested in e-cigs. I have a memory of a hilarious smoke machine malfunction when Cliff Richard was singing a hit song in the 1980s. He all but disappeared into the mist. At least it didn't kill him (my sister would have worn black for the rest of her life).
I learn so much from your videos and I can bore freinds even more now
Not all ecigarrette coils are made that way, I should send you some of the old coils from my mod for you to take to bits. They're tiny and made of stainless steel with no wick.
I'm incredibly surprised, and admittedly a tad disappointed to see Clive's not vaping away on a custom box he made himself 🙁 I'd gladly send the Gerber files and BOM for one of my custom PCBs/mods to get ya started!
Don’t like the sound of skid marks on my close apart from my underpants
