I think this is the first ripple projector of this type that I've come across that is low voltage. It runs on a 5V power supply and is unusual in that there is a very small number of fixed colours, and the motor is also speed controllable from the remote. The main advantage of the remote speed control is that the motor appears to be pulse width modulated, which means it starts and runs stably at low speed.
At first i thought it was driving the LEDs quite hard (no heatsink compound), but a lot of the power is actually dissipated by the resistors in series with the LEDs, which is also why the fan fires right onto the PCB too. The low voltage operation is a novel twist on this unit, and with a suitable lead it can run off a USB power bank. Sadly there is no memory function, so you need to adjust it to the desired effect every time you turn it on.
When the unit was left running for a while it got modestly warm, but not excessively so.

This begs to be modified with a different IR RGB colour changing light controller to get serious colour control for trippyness!!
I plan on having this hooked up to a timer. Without a memory function, what is the default color, mode and speed when its powered back on, and will it power on by itself (from the timer) or does it need to be switched on each time with the remote? great detailed breakdown of this unit.
CAUTION: I just got back from London Western Eye Hospital after having this unit cause lasting damage to my eyes. DO NOT ever look directly into beams, mount so it diffuses off a ceiling with no way anyone can get between the beam and the ceiling. PLEASE add a warning to the video! I made the mistake of thinking LEDs were safe as they were not laser units. Thanks!
Hi Big Clive, how could I modify the LED circuit in this fixture to lock onto cyan (only powering the Blue & Green chips)? I would like to make a single colour effect and and have no need for any of the IR remote functions. Thanks for your help!

I bought four of these, and one motor is much faster than the others. Even on slow speed, it's very fast. Do you know of any way to slow it down? Perhaps a trim pot on the circuit board? I was hoping it was dc, but it seems to be pwm.

Have you ever torn down one of the cheap ($25) rgbw Dmx par lights? I bought a few and they were all using a similar internal design, and various hardware revisions of the same logic board, with an stm8 mcu (quite possibly ripe for hacking)
