I just don't understand why they don't place a few fancy IC's and a MCU, it would increase the production cost a few dollars but at least it would reduce the debunked scam rate and maybe booster the sales.

I don't know wheat you're trying to do? Why aren't you "testing" these devices with a refrigerator attached? My experience with these type of devices is that they are for phase/ power factor correction with devices with big inductive loads.
